After $6.25 billion 'gift' to seed Trump Accounts, Michael and Susan Dell donate $750 million to fund …

Michael Dell and Susan Dell are donating $750 million to University of Texas at Austin. This donation will be used to build a new AI-focused medical centre and research campus. The major philanthropic move from the Dell couple comes shortly after their $6.25 billion pledge tied to “Trump Accounts” to fund investment vehicles introduced under policies linked to Donald Trump. The initiative aims to support children born before 2025 who are not eligible for government seed funding. Referencing to their Trump Accounts donation, the Dell couple said in a previous interview,“It’s certainly the largest gift we will have given,” adding that more philanthropic plans may follow. The new facility is set to be called the UT Dell Medical Center and is expected to open in 2030, and will integrate medicine, science, and computing into a single campus designed around artificial intelligence (AI). The donation also brings the couple’s total contributions to the university to more than $1 billion. “What makes this moment so meaningful is the opportunity to build something that brings every part of the journey together—from how students learn, to how discoveries are made, to how care reaches families,” the Dell couple said in a statement. The planned campus will span more than 300 acres and include a hospital with 300 to 500 beds, outpatient services, and a full-service emergency department. It will also feature a research hub aimed at applying AI and advanced computing to healthcare, enabling earlier diagnosis and more personalised treatment. The funding will also support undergraduate scholarships, student housing, and the Texas Advanced Computing Center, which is developing a large academic supercomputer using Dell’s AI infrastructure.

Dell founder Michael Dell’s ‘connection’ with the University of Texas

The donation reflects Dell’s long-standing ties to the university, where he started his company from a dorm room in 1984. Initially enrolled as a premed student, Dell shifted his focus to computers and eventually built a global technology business. In a 2017 interview with Fortune, “You have to embrace risk, and you have to accept failure. If you want to really make it big, you’d better come up with something unique.”Dell later left the university before completing his degree, though his early work there laid the foundation for his career. The original dorm room will be renamed “Dell House” in his honour.Apart from the Dell Couple, others who have invested heavily in education and research, especially in healthcare and AI, include Phil Knight, Michael Bloomberg, Stephen Schwarzman, and Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, who have made large donations to universities and medical institutions.
