NEW DELHI: Delhi govt plans to approach court over use of certified green firecrackers, CM Rekha Gupta said on Monday.Currently, all kinds of firecrackers are banned in Delhi due to severe pollution concerns. “Govt respects the sentiments of Delhi residents who celebrate Diwali with great enthusiasm and devotion,” said Gupta. “Govt will request the Supreme Court to permit the limited use of green firecrackers during the festival,” she added.This will balance the cultural and religious sentiments of people with the need for environmental protection, she said. Despite enforcement efforts, many continue to use highly polluting firecrackers, worsening Delhi’s air quality.Environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, “We will appeal to the court that Diwali is a big festival so at least for a day people should be allowed to burst green crackers.”
