Lead contamination in protein powders can come from various sources, the raw ingredients that grow in soil, with other heavy metal. For example, plant-based protein such as peas, rice, can absorb lead from polluted environments. Processing and manufacturing units can also be the reason why lead is being found in protein.
Vegetable-based protein powders contain more lead than dairy-based powders. This is due in part to the fact that plants absorb minerals, such as heavy metals, from the ground. The research found that plant-based powders contained an average of nine times more lead than their dairy-based counterparts. Highest levels of lead were found in top plant-based brands, and they are being questioned about their safety for regular consumption.
