Dhanush and director Mari Selvaraj are reuniting for D56, a grand project blending fantasy, history, and politics, slated to begin filming in September 2026. Selvaraj described it as his career’s biggest endeavor, inspired by tracing and potentially erasing a historical origin. AR Rahman will compose the music for this ambitious film, which follows Dhanush’s D55 schedule.

Actor Dhanush and filmmaker Mari Selvaraj are set to reunite for their next film which is tentatively titled D56. The project will reportedly go on floors in September 2026. The director confirmed the update at a recent press meet.Mari Selvaraj stated that the film will be a mix of fantasy, history, and politics as reported by Cinema Express. He described the project as the “biggest project” of his career. The film marks his second collaboration with Dhanush following the acclaimed 2021 action drama ‘Karnan’.

Director reveals what inspired the story

Speaking at an earlier event, Mari Selvaraj said, “There is an origin point—set long ago—that eventually paved the way for films like Pariyerum Perumal, Karnan, Maamannan, Vaazhai, and Bison. But what if someone tried to trace that origin all the way back and wipe it out completely? That question lies at the heart of this story. Bringing this vision to life requires an enormous creative and technical effort. Dhanush sir told me that this film should stand as the biggest milestone in both our careers.“ D56 appears set to expand that universe with a larger canvas.

Shoot plan follows Dhanush’s D55 schedule

Before stepping into D56, Dhanush will complete work on another upcoming project which is tentatively titled D55 and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy (‘Amaran’).. The director has already confirmed that filming for D55 is underway. Reports suggest Dhanush will wrap this film in about six months. Reportedly Dhanush will then shift to D56 without a long break.

AR Rahman to compose music for D56

The film will feature music by Academy Award-winning composer AR Rahman. This will be the second collaboration of Mari Selvaraj with AR Rahman as they teamed up earlier for ‘Maamannan’ in 2023, starring Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil and Udhayanidhi Stalin in the lead.Beyond D55 and D56, Dhanush is also preparing for his role in Kara which is directed by Vignesh Raja (‘Por Thozhil’ fame).
