Ryan Gosling spills beans on how his kids were involved in ‘Project Hail Mary’: ‘They’ve seen so many cuts’

Ryan Gosling might not be the one to bring him work home, but for ‘The Fall Guy’ star, his kids play a crucial role in his work. The Hollywood hunk recently opened up about a pretty sweet behind-the-scenes detail from his new sci-fi movie, ‘Project Hail Mary’. Turns out, his two daughters played a bigger part in the film than anyone realized. The movie, which hits theaters later this month, is already getting a lot of buzz, but for Gosling, it’s extra special because of the ways his kids helped bring it to life.

Ryan Gosling on his family’s involvement in ‘Project Hail Mary’

In a recent interview with People, Gosling, 45, shared how Esmeralda Amada (11) and Amada Lee (9) pitched in during some of the tougher filming days of ‘Project Hail Mary’. For the unversed, in the movie, Gosling plays a science teacher who wakes up alone in space and has to save humanity. There’s an alien named Rocky, and while filming, Gosling sometimes had to act out those scenes without anyone there to play Rocky. That’s where his daughters stepped in.He explained that sometimes, when he needed a little help or wanted to mix things up, his daughters would jump in. He’d wear an earpiece, and they’d read Rocky’s lines so he could react to them in real time. There are even moments in the movie where he’s grinning or cracking up, and those are thanks to his kids feeding him lines off-camera.“Sometimes when I was working, and I needed to sort of switch things up, or whatever, my kids would come in, and I had an earpiece in my ear, and they would talk for Rocky, so I could talk to them as Rocky,” Gosling told People. Notably, in the finished film, Rocky is actually voiced by James Ortiz, but Gosling’s daughters were the ones who helped bring those moments to life while filming.Gosling also revealed how invested his kids have been in the film. “They’ve seen so many cuts of the movie,” Gosling said. “They’ve given me a lot of notes.” One memory from early on stuck with him: “I was trying on different costumes, and my daughter saw me in glasses and said, ‘You look smart in glasses.’ I needed to look smart for this role, so I took that advice.”Gosling even said his daughters were a big reason he took the movie in the first place. He told Access Hollywood, “My kids have seen multiple cuts. They give me lots of notes. Honestly, they’re the only critics I care about, and they’re very honest.” He added, “I made this for them. I wanted to make something we could all enjoy as a family, and I feel really lucky I got to do that.”Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Gosling’s kids have been involved in his work. Per People, back when he played Ken in 2023’s Barbie, he said his daughters couldn’t quite understand why he’d want to play that character, “They have no use for Ken,” he joked, but they still helped him get ready for the role. They spent months with him while he prepped at home, and when it came time to shoot a big scene, they were there off-camera, cheering him on.

‘Project Hail Mary’: What we know so far

For the unversed, ‘Project Hail Mary’ is a big sci-fi adventure based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel. The movie is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and stars Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up with amnesia on a spaceship and realizes he’s humanity’s last hope. He soon meets Rocky, an alien, and the two form an unlikely friendship as they try to save Earth. The film is set to release in theaters on March 20, 2026.

Ryan Gosling and his family

As for his family, Gosling and Eva Mendes keep things pretty private. They met filming ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ back in 2011 and have been together ever since. Their daughters, Esmeralda (born in 2014) and Amada (born in 2016), have mostly stayed out of the spotlight. Gosling and Mendes go out of their way to protect their girls’ privacy and let them have a normal childhood, even if their parents are two of Hollywood’s biggest names.
