Guwahati gets ready for Amit Shah’s mega roadshow today | Guwahati News
Guwahati: Intensifying the poll fever, Union home minister Amit Shah will land in Guwahati on Saturday evening and will hold an over 1km roadshow in the city for the BJP candidate for the Guwahati Central constituency.BJP candidate Vijay Kumar Gupta (70) will contest the election against Assam Jaitya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury (27) in the constituency, which was reconstituted during the 2023 delimitation exercise. After landing at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Shah will travel to Arya Vidyapith College Playground at Gopinath Nagar and from there he will begin the roadshow up to Nepali Mandir chowk covering over 1 km.BJP’s Guwahati city district president Tapan Das told TOI that the Union home minister will hold the roadshow in an open vehicle and about 70,000 party workers and supporters are expected to participate.“The roadshow could not be held on the Guwahati-Shillong road as it is the most-busiest road in the city. The normal public life will be paralysed if the roadshow is organised on the Guwahati-Shillong road. Therefore, we have selected the AK Azad Road from the Arya Vidyapeeth College to Nepali Mandir chowk,” he added.Das said nothing has been planned outside the airport this time as the party workers will gather here at the Arya Vidyapeeth College playground.Guwahati has five constituencies — New Guwahati, Guwahati Central, Dispur, Jalukbari and Dimoria (SC). BJP will contest in four seats while its ally AGP in one seat — Dimoria. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest in Jalukbari seeking a sixth consecutive term.Das said that the CM might join the roadshow. However, it is not confirmed. “There is no confirmation on the joining of other candidates in the roadshow as well,” he added.Shah will hold a meeting with the party’s state office bearers at a hotel in the city after the roadshow. On Sunday, Shah will campaign for minister Ashok Singhal at Dhekiajuli Tea Estate football field in Sonitpur district. He will then visit Tihu to campaign for minister Chandramohan Patowary at Chamata Higher Secondary School field in Nalbari district, concluding his two-day visit.Shah will return to Assam on April 2 to campaign in Barak Valley, for minister Krishnendu Paul at Lalmati in Sribhumi district, and for former MP Rajdeep Roy at the District Sports Association Playground in Silchar.Polling for the state’s 126-member assembly is scheduled on April 9, with counting of votes on May 4.
