In minority-dominated Dhubri, BJP picks Hindu OBC contender

Dhubri: In the minority-dominated Dhubri constituency, BJP has picked 55-year-old Hindu OBC leader Uttam Prasad as its candidate for the assembly poll race.Prasad, also an ardent social worker, had contested the civic body poll in 2017 as an independent candidate from Ward No. 9 and won. He later joined BJP.Though Prasad has been associated with BJP since 1991, he once jumped to Congress in 2015. However, he left Congress and returned to BJP in 2018.Prasad has served the party in various capacities, including party’s district youth wing general secretary, state executive member of Party’s OBC Morcha, president of Dhubri District OBC Morcha and currently as the general secretary in the Dhubri district body of the party.Talking to TOI, Prasad expressed confidence and said he would win the polls comfortably.“I enjoy the faith and support of all sections of people in this constituency, which is predominated inhabited by a religious minority. Dhubri has a long history of sending legislator to sit in the opposition bench. I appeal to all voters to unitedly vote for BJP as.”Prasad claimed that BJP all set to form the govt in Dispur and said if voters of Dhubri picked a BJP legislator, an era of development and progress would usher in.When contacted, BJP Dhubri district president Ranjit Kumar Ray expressed confidence over winning Dhubri and Golokganj out of the five seats in the district, while stating that there was chance of AGP winning the rest of the seats.In Dhubri constituency, there are 2,31,938 voters, of which there are only little over 50,000 Hindu voters. There are two more strong candidates for the seat — one from Congress and another from All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). AIUDF’s two-time legislator from Dhubri, Nazrul Haque, is also in the fray.
