The war in the Middle-East has witnessed the hunting and killing of Iran’s leaders. A report has said that this ‘mission’ was given to Israel and the country used a classified artificial technology (AI) in one of the most sophisticated and sustained targeted termination campaigns in modern military history. Israeli officials say that this tech has transformed their ability to track, locate and eliminate enemies with lethal precision, as per a report by The Washington Post.Since the start of the war on Febraury 28, Israel has killed Iran’s supreme leader and the Israeli military claims that it has eliminated more than 250 senior Iranian officials. The most recent strike came on Thursday, when Israel announced it had killed the naval commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. What’s noteworthy is the pace and precision of these strikes. According to the report, senior Israeli military and intelligence officials describe an assassination apparatus built over decades, but fundamentally transformed in recent years, providing what they call “new levels of lethal proficiency.”

Israel’s ‘Secret AI’ behind the kills

The report explains that tt the heart of Israel’s targeting operation is a new, classified AI platform that officials acknowledged but not fully described. One of fundamental needs for an AI system to work is data. Israel’s official claim that the AI system is fed an extraordinary range of data from sources inside Iran. These sources, the report says, are regime insiders who have been recruited to spy for Israel. The data also includes the information gathered by cyber-penetrations of thousands of targets via street cameras, payment platforms and internet choke points that the Iranian government itself installed to monitor. The new AI platform use the data and other streams, extracting patterns as well as clues about where officials live, how they move, who they meet and when they are vulnerable. The result is a targeting capability that operates continuously, across an entire country, at a scale no human intelligence network could match alone. This means that Israel has effectively turned Iran’s surveillance infrastructure against its own leadership.

How Israel used AI platform to transform its killing methods

The report cites Israel officials as saying that the country developed varied methods to act on this intelligence and have refined them through years of conflict in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran itself. For example, bombs have been planted months in advance and detonated at the precise moment. Drones small enough to slip through apartment windows have been deployed, and supersonic missiles fired from stealth fighter jets have struck targets with little or no warning. With AI technology, each method is chosen for the specific circumstances of the target such as location, security detail, timing and the level of collateral risk involved. When asked why Israel was assigned the mission of targeting Iran’s leadership, a senior Israeli security official was direct: “There was a need to target them. And we could do it.”
