Punjab’s most-wanted gangster Amritpal Singh detained in Europe on Interpol red corner notice | Chandigarh News
CHANDIGARH: Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalam, one of the most wanted gangsters linked to the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, has been detained on the Moldova border based on an Interpol red corner notice issued at the request of Punjab Police in coordination with ministry of external affairs (MEA), CBI and other central agencies.Punjab Police recently established the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), headed by IG-counterintelligence Ashish Choudhary, to track down criminals abroad and have them extradited to face legal action in Punjab.
Amritpal, a native of Dalam Nangal village in Batala, fled the country on a fake passport, but keeps making extortion calls to businessmen, particularly in the Amritsar region, say police sources.Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said Amritpal is wanted in several serious cases, including murder, attempted murder and drug smuggling in Punjab. “His detention follows sustained international coordination and persistent follow-up by Punjab Police agencies,” he said, adding that legal and diplomatic procedures are underway to secure his extradition / deportation to India so that he can face the law. OFTEC is pursuing various criminals hiding abroad, he added.
