BHOPAL: In a startling breach of security, thieves targeted the official residence of Vishwas Sarang in the high-security 74 Bungalows area of Bhopal, stealing trophies and mementoes while leaving behind cash and expensive electronics. The incident occurred between the intervening night of April 2 and the early hours of April 3 but went unnoticed until Monday morning, when a security guard discovered the storeroom lock had been broken. The residence, located in one of the city’s most secure VIP zones, has now come under scrutiny for lapses in surveillance.

Complainant, Varun Saxena, who works as a personal assistant at the minister’s residence (C-12, 74 Bungalows, near Anand Vihar School), told police that on April 2, around 12 noon, he had locked the storeroom at the minister bungalow after keeping items inside. However, at 11 am on April 3, the lock was found broken. Upon checking, he found around five award shields missing. “A detailed list of other stolen items would be submitted later,” he said.According to police, unidentified intruders forcibly entered the storeroom and selectively took items the minister had received at official and public events. Surprisingly, they ignored cash and high-value electronic gadgets, focusing only on commemorative items. The security breach and the delay in its detection has intensified questions about surveillance and vigilance in the VIP area. TT Nagar SHO Gaurav Singh said no CCTVs were installed at the spot, and police are examining footage from nearby CCTVs to trace suspects. Further investigation is underway.
