Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk have a complex history. Mostly, they have been reported taking jabs on social media but court documents filed on Friday (March 27) revealed that by early 2025 both the tech CEOs appeared more friendly than ever with Tesla CEO even inviting the Facebook founder to join hands and buy OpenAI.According to the latest documents in Musk’s ongoing lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI have pulled back the curtain on a private exchange wherein Musk tried to recruit Zuckerberg into his battle against OpenAI and the three words Zuckerberg sent back.

The texts – dated February 3, 2025 – show Zuckerberg reaching out to Musk with a supportive message about his work with the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE.“Looks like DOGE is making progress. I’ve got our teams on alert to take down content doxxing or threatening the people on your team. Let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help,” Zuckerberg wrote. Musk replied with a heart emoji (liked the message).

The ‘OpenAI question’ that Elon Musk asked

After this exchange, Musk shifted to a different subject entirely, asking Zuckerberg whether he was “open to the idea of bidding on the OpenAI IP with me and some others.” Zuckerberg’s reply was short: he wanted to “discuss it live”. Musk said he would call the next day.Previous documents disclosed in the same case show that Musk had extended a similar invitation to Zuckerberg as part of a broader effort to assemble a group to acquire OpenAI’s assets. Zuckerberg, however, never officially signed on to the bid.
