Micron opens semiconductor facility in Gujarat
Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the US-based company’s ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) plant in Sanand, Gujarat. Speaking at the inauguration, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said: “India’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain is not just welcome, it is essential under the leadership of your great PM. As other nations in this neighbourhood aggressively expand production of legacy chips and seek to dominate the sector, India offers the secure and reliable alternative”.Government plans new $11 billion fund to support chipmaking in IndiaA Bloomberg report recently said that India is preparing to launch a new $11 billion fund to support domestic chipmaking. The initiative expected within the next two to three months will offer subsidies for chip design projects, manufacturing equipment and supply chain development. The Bloomberg report further highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is accelerating India’s semiconductor campaign as part of his broader vision to make the country a global manufacturing hub. While India’s chip industry is still in its early stages, the government hopes to replicate the success it has in attracting Apple, which now assembles 25% of iPhones in India.
