The US government has ordered Reddit to hand over personal details of an anonymous user who posted criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers online, in what free speech advocates are calling a serious and alarming escalation in the Trump administration’s efforts to identify its online critics. Reddit has been ordered to appear before a federal grand jury in Washington DC by April 14, according to a subpoena obtained by The Intercept. The US government wants the social media platform to hand over the name, address, phone number, and other personal data linked to the account of a user known only as John Doe, an Oregon-based Reddit member whose posts, according to their own lawyers, contain nothing that suggests any criminal activity.
How it started
The case began on March 4, when an ICE agent based in Fairfax, Virginia sent Reddit an administrative summons — a legal demand that does not require a judge’s approval — asking for more than a month’s worth of data on the anonymous user.Two days later, Reddit alerted the user, who hired lawyers from the Oregon-based Civil Liberties Defense Center. When those lawyers reviewed John Doe’s posts, they found nothing alarming. Among the most aggressive things they could find: a comment sharing publicly available biographical details about an ICE officer who had shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis, a suggestion for what to write on an anti-ICE protest sign, and a complaint that “TSA sucks.“John Doe’s lawyers successfully challenged the summons in a California federal court. ICE withdrew its request — but only to come back through a different, more powerful route.On March 31, just days after withdrawing the earlier summons, the US government issued a new order asking Reddit to appear before a federal grand jury in Washington, DC. Unlike administrative summons, grand jury subpoenas are more difficult to challenge and are often kept secret.
What the user posted
According to court documents, the Reddit user’s posts included comments on a January 2026 incident in Minneapolis, where an ICE officer fatally shot a 37-year-old woman during an enforcement operation.The user had shared publicly available information about the officer involved and made general comments about protests and government agencies. Their lawyers argue that these posts fall under protected speech and do not amount to wrongdoing.
What Reddit says
Reddit said that it does not voluntarily share user data and reviews all legal requests carefully adding that it aims to protect user privacy and will only provide the minimum data required under law.“Privacy is central to how Reddit operates, and we take our commitment to protecting that seriously,” the company said in a statement to The Intercept. “We do not voluntarily share information with any government, especially not on users exercising their rights to criticize the government or plan a protest.”
